Don’t Rest off the Ball

Larry Bird

I am constantly telling my players, “Don’t Rest off the ball!” It is where players try to find time to rest and stay on the court. You rest on the bench! You can’t hide lazy. Possibly the worst four letter word of them all! The big L, Lazy leads to Losing!

When a coach calls me to tell me to consider recruiting one of his players, i ask the question, “How is he defensively?” Time after time the coach will say, “He is a good on the ball defender.” What he is actually saying is that he has a bad habit of being lazy off the ball. He often follows that up with saying, “I know you can get him to play hard” or “I can’t afford to get him in foul trouble”.

I have found that I can rarely help a lazy person, but I can lead them to someone who can! If I can just somehow get them to go to the hole! I am not talking about the basket, but the water hole called The Well. If they will only drink of the Living Water named Jesus!

This same principle of success applies to worship. Get your worship on all the time. Worship Music is full of Praise. So just Praise! No Matter what! Want to win, just Praise! Let your hands praise him. High and lifted up! Clap your hands all he people, shout unto God with a voice of triumph! Hands down, man down! Idle hands are the enemy’s tool house.

Don’t rest off the ball! Stay focus and in a stance, looking to defend and attack the enemy. At all times worship and praise! Day of rest was 24/7 worship and praise! Not R and R!

“Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy” is one of the Ten Commandments found in the Hebrew Bible. The full text of the commandment reads: … Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God.”

They honestly have signs on stores in Israel that say open 24/6! God is All-Powerful, He does not need rest, nor in and through him do you!

Rest assured, Jesus finished it! He already won our race. He endured all the pain. It is already done, we can find peace and rest our fears and pick up our confidence. Jesus finished it and sat down at the right hand of the father. You are not running your race on your strength. You will lose. You are now powered by the power that walked on water! You can rest in that and make plays all day long on or off the ball! Even in your weakness? Because of your weakness, you are strong! Claim the power of the Holy Spirit. Stride in it, His Pace, His Plan, don’t get caught up in any other race! No comparison, no rat race, just Praise!

So don’t Rest off the Ball or confuse Sunday as a day of Rest. Keep Sunday Holy and spend it worshipping the King! True meaning of how we are to rest on the Sabbath. God is saying, let him stop working and focus on Me, that I am the source of all that he has. I am the fountain of blessing. I have made the very hands and mind with which he works. Let one day out of seven demonstrate that all land and all animals and all raw materials and all breath and strength and thought and emotion and everything come from Me.

There is a saying by shooters. “Hands down, man down!” Same applies in worshipping! Man up, and worship our King like he deserves! Not just when you feel like it. Quit resting off the ball!

God deserves 365/24//7! Yes, on earth we work to provide for our families. It is like tithing. we are to tithe, but you should give more than ten percent! At the minimum stop one day a week and praise Him with all you have!
