I believe most people would agree that the greatest male basketball player of all-time is Michael Jordan. MJ shocked the world prior to the 1993-94 season when he walked away from the NBA after the tragic death of his father. Jordan chose to chase his father’s dream for him of becoming a professional baseball player. I truly admired Michael for his desire to honor his father’s dream. Michael was willing to walk away from the game he loved in the prime of their career to honor his father. It is one of the many things that MJ did during his career that made him special and set him apart from others.
Now, arguably the most dominate female basketball player to not only wear the no. 23, but possibly to every walk the earth is making a similar decision. The 29 year old Maya Moore is in the prime of her storied career. She has four WNBA Championships, four gold medals, and the honors go on and on. A little over a week ago the sensational Moore announced that she was going to sit out the upcoming WNBA season in order to follow her Father’s dream as well. Her goal, the same as her Father, is to make her Lord and Savior Jesus famous. The move has garnered praise from some other outspoken professional Christian athletes such as Steph Curry who tweeted, “So much Respect for this @MooreMaya. God Bless.”
Moore said, she feels led to focus on “some ministry dreams that have been stirring in my heart for many years.” She followed that with an amazingly powerful statement, “I measure success by asking, ‘Am I living out my purpose?’ I learned a long time ago that my purpose is to know Jesus and to make Him known.”
