I am often asked by coaches if I will share with them the ten Biblical Principles God gave me to follow when He finally opened the door for me to become a head college basketball coach. at OKWU in 2007. When I say the word, “finally”, I say it with every bit of the desperation and frustration you can imagine.
When do you give up on a dream and throw in the towel? After 10 years as an assistant coach, finishing second in head coaching searches over and over, I was either crazy or too hard headed to give up on the dream God had placed in my heart of becoming a head college basketball coach.
When the opportunity finally came in 2007, it was not the dream job I had hoped for. It was not only one of the last jobs that I would consider, it was the only head college coaching position that I ever turned down four years prior in 2003.
Why would I finally change my mind and take the position? God had to push me out of my comfort zone. I did not get my dream job, thus I found myself for the first time without a job. When you have four kids, a mini van, and are over 30 years old, many would say that you might be hanging on to a dream a little too long.
Two months before I found out that I was not going to be offered my dream job, God challenged me to fight for a friend who had a life threatening brain aneurysm. Through this challenge, for the first time in my life, I fasted and prayed at a level that I had never reached before spiritually. Instead of reaching my dream, I finally reached my wife’s dream of becoming the spiritual leader of our home.
When I received the call about taking the head coaching position at Oklahoma Wesleyan University, Sheri and I both heard the Spirit telling us that God was going to make something out of nothing. Sheri actually responded by saying, “OKWU does not count, it is less than nothing.” She said that because when we interviewed four years prior, OKWU was close to closing their doors. After six straight twenty loss seasons, it was far from a dream job. However when you don’ t have a job, you see things through a different lens.
The one thing that I did know was that I did not have the scholarships, facilities, or ability to do what was necessary to turn OKWU around. It would take a miracle to turn the program around at all. After God did exactly that, I felt inspired to write the formula and story of what God had accomplished in a book called For His Glory. I never published the book, instead I felt the reason for writing the book was so my father could read it prior to going to heaven. Ten year later, I feel God has encouraged me to finally publish the book.
