Freedom Impossible

Music, rap or even poetry goes hand in hand with sports. They are all examples of how humans love to speak their voice through powerful words. We can divide a word by breaking down its root meaning to get a better understanding, or we can combine words to emphasize the meaning. Let’s have a little fun! Instead of Mission Impossible, let’s go with Freedom Impossible.

Impossible is a rather easy word to break down. When something is impossible, it can’t happen or exist, and an impossibility is impossible. Both words come from the Latin impossibilis, “not possible,” from the roots im-, “not,” and possibilis, “that can be done.”

Two of my favorite verses are Matthew 19:26, “Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God ALL things are possible.” And Luke 1:37 “For nothing is impossible with God.”

Every athlete, coach, and person desires to accomplish the impossible. Why are we not all seeking with all our heart the King that functions daily in the atmosphere of the impossible?

Another desire that every player has is freedom. When I searched for a picture for this blog post, I typed in the word “Freedom”. I found it interesting how many pictures came up depicting freedom as someone standing with their arms stretched out towards the heavens on the top of something majestic such as a mountain, cliff, or waterfall.

There are so many interesting thoughts on the word FREEDOM. The problem is the lack of understanding of what true freedom is. As a young immature player, I wanted the freedom to do things my way and still get playing time. What I needed was a great coach to teach me the truth about freedom. Without discipline and self-control, there is no freedom, just selfish ambition.

Let’s break down this powerful word, FREEDOM. Free comes from the German frei, meaning, “to love”. The word friend shares the same origin. Dom comes from domein or domaz, “to control or lead”. The word dominate shares the same origin. Put these two words together and you have loving control or to lovingly lead.

Sadly, over time the word has taken on more meaning and people have politicized the word so people could control other people. True freedom is the ability to control your environment. Once you have the ability, character and discipline to dominate your environment, then you gain control or freedom to do what you love. You then have the ability to control and dominate with the gift have been given. It is then that you find your purpose. Now that is the definition of true freedom.

There is no greater burden than freedom. Dr. Myles Munroe states, “Slavery is the absence of responsibility. The comfort of oppression is the absence of self-determination. When you’re free, you can’t blame anybody, but yourself.”

Freedom is not the absence of discipline, laws, and restrictions. False freedom is believing you are free to do anything you please, with no punishment. Freedom is not void of work either. Freedom comes with a heavy price. The demands are greater than slavery, poverty, and oppression.

Let’s go the other direction and instead of breaking a word down, let’s combine words to emphasize meaning. Putting two words together that do not go together is referred to as an oxymoron. A couple great examples are Bittersweet and Jumbo Shrimp.

Let’s go back to impossible for this one. I’m going try to be creative and original on some of these:

The God of the Impossible allows you to live, rise and conquer with…

Breakthrough Expectancy

Peaceful Urgency

Crazy Sound-Mind

Fearless Love

Unimaginable Dreams

Disappearing Darkness

He does all of this to make… Your Story His Glory

How about the two words, GAME CHANGER?

Jesus sent us an unbeatable player to give us an advantage over the enemy. Why would any great coach not play his or her best player? He is the ultimate weapon against our enemy. He can lead, comfort, encourage, strengthen everyone. You don’t have to trade for him, He comes as a gift. He just desires a relationship with you and to honor the Father. He is the most powerful player on earth. My final two words of this post are the two most powerful words you can ever seek until Jesus returns. By seeking Him, you seek Jesus. God was on earth in the Old Testament, God sent Jesus in the New Testament, and In the Last Days Jesus sent the HOLY SPIRIT!
