In Honor of Coach Joe Kennedy

Knee

20 Years of service in the Marine Corps is not only admirable, it is honorable and deserves the utmost respect. That is unless you take a knee after a coaching a public school football game for a private prayer. We are dedicating the first night of the SLC3 Coaching Experience to Coach Joe Kennedy!

As a veteran who fought to defend freedom, Joe Kennedy has found himself struggling to understand why his rights did not matter because he was a public employee. What he did understand was that standing up for what you believe, no matter the adversity, is the right thing to do. Standing, or in this case taking a knee, for his First Amendment rights was a non-negotiable action.

To me it reminds me of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who refused to bow before King Nebucadnezzar, King of Babylon. No matter the consequences, they focused on doing what they knew was right. These three bold young men stood and God honored demonstrating that boldness and faith. As a result, God showed up and honored that faith.

Coach Kennedy encourages others to be bold and take a stand. He says, “You don’t have to hide your faith. Your rights are your rights. It’s important to stay in the fight, because if one of your First Amendment rights is taken away, the the others will fall also.”
